20.10.2024 Discover Open Source Trio – an international jazz trio that combines Nordic jazz with a touch of Balkan flavor and create a fresh and sophisticated atmosphere for your loved ones this holiday season!
Founded in 2010, Open Source Trio has been touring across Europe, modernizing the standard jazz trio setup. True to their name, the band’s compositions blend a variety of styles, including jazz, classical, electronica, and a hint of Bulgarian folklore.
In early 2014, Open Source Trio released their debut album, Mirage, which was met with critical acclaim. It was featured on Radio6 (NL), All About Jazz, the Bulgarian National Radio, Radio Romania Cultural, Nova TV, bTV, and Radio Darik. Their music was also used as a soundtrack for the documentary Movers and Shakers of Contemporary Art. In 2015, the band performed at numerous festivals across Europe, collaborated with the Pleven Philharmonic Orchestra, and was selected for the finals of the EBU European Jazz Contest in Rotterdam.
Their second album, Altitude, captures the shared experiences of the band over the years. Drummer Juri Schewe explains: “Altitude represents the great heights we often explored—whether in Bulgaria’s Rila mountains or the Alps. These same heights were mirrored in our most intense moments on stage, where we felt both free and grounded, as if time stood still.”
After several lineup changes, the trio welcomed bassist Hristiyana Valkova in 2023.
These three musicians bring a fresh perspective to jazz, naturally blending different styles in their music. Open Source Trio’s sound has been described as engaging, thought-provoking, and intricate, while still managing to connect with listeners on a personal level.
Since 2023, Momchil, Juri, and Hristiyana have been dedicating their efforts to their third studio album, which is set for release in 2025. Their newest single, Flow, is scheduled to come out in November 2024.
